Thee Satisfaction has done it again. Actually, it looks like they’ve done it twice; read on.

It’s popular opinion around thees parts that Seattle is primed to roll back onto the international stage as a music mecca. Everyone, especially members and managers of Seattle’s unexpected Hip Hop scene are proudly patting themselves on the back for doing such a great job. But this thing is just starting to roll; I’d hate to see some of these up and comers get too cocky or put their eggs in one basket or just hang it up altogether. Bands like MAD RAD are doing whatever it takes to get noticed using the punk rock ethic that all press is good press. People like them quite a bit, but I just don’t see it. Shabazz Palaces conversely tried to retain a certain amount of mystery when they popped late last year. Ishmael Butler was/is a member of Digable Planets but didn’t want to attract too much attention and let the music speak for itself (Shabazz Palaces are very different than Digable Planets.) Other notable acts like Fresh Espresso and Champagne Champagne have their well deserved hats in the ring. Somewhere in all of this lay Thee Satisfaction.

Thees girls (Cat and Stas) are about as real as it gets. They are sweet, smart and self admitted weirdos (I love weirdos.) Thee Satisfaction hides behind nothing or no one; what you see and hear is what you get. Their unpretentious approach immediately gets listeners on the music side of things. Hip Hop can develop a thin layer of bullshit over it to create an image which sometimes compliments an artist, but is usually (in my opinion) smoke and mirrors. Thee Satisfaction aren’t a triple threat, they are an undeniable one. Thees Proud, Black, Gay, Women can perform anytime, anywhere on a moments notice and have you begging (seriously) for more. With no cheesy gimmicks, irony or cockiness, Cat and Stas are going to own this town. I know, I know, I have that tendency to gush – but I also have a tendency to be RIGHT.

Check out their newest mixtapes, yes two of them, after the jump. After that, keep searching around their music page and blog. I also HIGHLY recommend their Sa-Ra Creative Partners Mixtape; but you’ll see after just a few clicks why I am so in love with Thees girls!

Thee Satisfaction are performing new material at pun(c)tuation gallery this coming Friday, July 9th from 6-9 P.M.

Thanks to Michael Engel for the amazing photo from backstage at Chop Suey!

Leave it to an obsessive mind such as my own to lay it all out for you! Let us know if we’ve forgotten anyone.

The Color Awesome’s Guide to Musicians appearing on The Simpsons

Season 1-11 data gathered from The Simpson’s Archive Guest Star Guide

Michael Jackson (Season Three)

The first big name musician was Jackson, who appeared in the third season premiere under the pseudonym John Jay Smith. On the episode, Homer is sent to an asylum and befriends his large, white cellmate Leon, who just so happens to believe he’s Michael Jackson, and sound just like him, thanks to Jackson himself providing Leon’s voice.

Spinal Tap in “The Otto Show” (Season Three)

After he kills Spinal Tap in a bus crash, it’s revealed that Otto the bus driver doesn’t have a license, forcing him to lose his job and reevaluate his life. Tap bassist Derek Smalls is played by Harry Shearer, who does a ton of voices on The Simpsons, including Mr. Burns, Principal Skinner, Smithers and Ned Flanders.

Aerosmith

This was the first time a band played themselves, as they begin hanging out and performing at Moe’s, after the introduction of the Flaming Moe drink makes the bar a huge success.

Red Hot Chili Peppers in “Krusty Gets Kancelled” (Season Four)

After Krusty the Klown’s show gets canceled, the Simpsons recruit his celebrity friends, including The Chilis, to appear on a comeback special. In reference to their occasional nude antics, the band is shown in their underwear throughout the episode.

The Ramones in “Rosebud” (Season Five)

Mr. Matt Groening has listed this guest appearance by the influential punk group, as his favorite among all the Simpsons guest stars. Burns discovers that his beloved childhood teddy bear Bobo, whom he lost years ago, has fallen into the possession of Maggie. He does everything in his evil power to get Bobo back from the baby. At the show’s opening, The Ramones play a birthday party for Mr. Burns, performing a punk rock version of “Happy Birthday to You.” In less than a minute of screen time, the band deliver a flurry of great jokes, as their performance of “Happy Birthday” for Mr. Burns is added to with lines like, “Hey, up yours Springfield!” and “Go to hell, you old bastard!”, all capped off with the clueless Burns ordering, “Have the Rolling Stones killed.”

Smashing Pumpkins in “Homerpalooza” (Season Seven)

Determined to prove he’s still hip, Homer takes his kids to an alternative-rock festival show. His ability to survive being shot in the stomach with a cannon lands him a spot on the festival bill, where he befriends the Pumpkins.

Sonic Youth in “Homerpalooza” (Season Seven)

Sonic Youth appeared alongside smashing Pumpkins and Cypress Hill in the ‘Homerpalooza episode’ (May 1996)

Cypress Hill in “Homerpalooza” (Season Seven)

Appearing alongside Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth in the ‘Homerpalooza episode’ (May 1996), Cypress Hill performed ‘Insane In The Brain’, only this time with the London Symphony Orchestra (which they had accidentally ordered while high)

U2 in “Trash of the Titans” (Season Nine)

Homer decides to run for sanitation commissioner. As part of his hapless campaign, he hijacks a U2 concert to get his message across. Spoofing his self-serious, socially-conscious persona, Bono demands that the band’s fans listen to Homer’s crackpot message because trash “affects the whole damn planet.” The Edge, looking annoyed, murmurs, “Oh, here we go …”

The Who in “A Tale of Two Springfields” (Season 12)

<img alt="the-who" src="http://www.songpeople.co.uk/images/stories/the-who.jpg" height="289" width="407"class="alignright">Angered that the city now has two area codes, Homer leads a rebellious faction that splits from Springfield, forming their own (poorly run) town known as New Springfield. As a way to make Springfield jealous, Homer tricks The Who into playing New Springfield.

R.E.M. in “Homer the Moe” (Season 13)

Moe decides his bar needs to be revamped into a snooty, upscale establishment. Annoyed, Homer starts his own bar in his garage, inviting REM to perform. In another great example of a band tweaking its image, Michael Stipe gets angry and breaks a bottle in half, preparing to use it as a weapon. The other band members restrain him, as guitarist Peter Buck says, “That’s not the R.E.M. way.” Embarrassed, Stipe replies, “You’re right. Let’s recycle those shards and get out of here.”

The Rolling Stones in “How I Spent My Strummer Vacation” (Season 14)

Depressed that his family has sucked the spontaneity from his life, Homer goes to a rock fantasy camp run by the Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. They get big laughs playing the aging-songwriting version of an adorable old married couple. This episode also featured Elvis Costello and Lenny Kravitz.

Metallica in “The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer” (Season 18)

Metallica appearance had nothing to do with the actual plot: Otto drives by the band as they stand by their broken-down tour bus. When he offers them a lift, James Hetfield responds warily, “We don’t take rides from strangers.” Also, we learn that if you have ever waved a lighter during a Metallica concert, the band members will instantly recognize you and remember your exact seat number.

The White Stripes in “Jazzy and the Pussycats” (Season 18)

Bart becomes a world-class drummer, joining a jazz ensemble and hanging out with the White Stripes The rock showdown between Bart and the White Stripes mimics the group’s stop-motion video for “The Hardest Button to Button.”

David Byrne

The leader of Talking Heads produces and co-records Homer’s song “Everybody Hates Ned Flanders”, he then sings the extended salsa mix of the song and gets thrown onto Moe’s car, at that Moe says “You ever see the movie Misery?” “No.” “Then this’ll be a whole new experience for ya.”

Weird Al

Weird Al has been on the show 3 times. My favorite is when he parodies Homer’s grunge song in the episode “That 90′s Show”.

Tom Jones

Tom Jones as Himself in Marge Gets a Job , where Mr. Burns attempts to seduce Marge with the help of the kidnapped singer, after Marge states the Welshman is her favourite.

Green Day

When Springfield made it to the silver screen in 2007′s ‘The Simpsons Movie’, Green Day did a cameo. They are killed early on, when the polluted Lake Springfield corrodes the stage during their performance – but at least they got to record a version of the theme song, which was also released as a single.

Kid Rock

Oh, that Homer. In an episode that aired just after the turn of the millennium, Homer, saddened to learn that he may only have four more years to live, meets up with some rowdy Spring Breakers during a trip to Florida to “recover.” There, all fears of mortality aside, Homer attends that undisputed king of white-dude rap-metal’s concert.

Britney Spears

Way back in January 2000 (yes, she has been famous for over a decade now), Britney Spears popped up on The Simpsons to present an award to the city’s oldest man, Cornelius Chapman. Sure, she may have subsequently killed him with her kiss, but at least he died happy.

‘N Sync

Before he broke free from the pack for a surprisingly interesting solo career, Britney’s then-beau Justin Timberlake was just another member of pubescent boy band ‘N Sync. In retrospect, we should have known that the group’s appearance on an episode meant to send up their whole embarrassing genre was a sign of good things to come.

The Dixie Chicks

Listen, we’ll never stop being happy that the Dixie Chicks were brave enough to stand up against George W. Bush. But nothing could make us love their pop-country balladry. Still, they’re an essential part of the plot in an episode of the show that features Springfield’s local fallen country star, Lurleen Lumpkin.

Coldplay

Earlier this year, The Simpsons celebrated their 20th anniversary on air by bestowing upon Homer a million-dollar lottery windfall. We’re kind of disappointed that he spent his money by choosing Coldplay, of all bands, to serenade his his family. But at least Chris Martin, et. al., seemed to have fun recording for the show.

50 Cent

On a 2005 episode called “Pranksta Rap,” in which Bart gets himself into trouble at hip-hop show, he runs into Fitty. The uninspiring pop rapper, who’s seen his share of juvenile delinquent behavior, waxes philosophical and advises the pint-size troublemaker to stay in school.

Cyndi Lauper

Paul and Linda McCartney

Episode: Lisa the Vegetarian. This is my favorite episode of all time! Paul and Linda McCartney talk with Lisa about the benefits of going veg. She sees the light and has been veg on the series ever since. Of course Apu still has disdain for her because she is not vegan.

“Holy shit! I’m a Simpson! I made it!” She giggles, and there is a trace of that famous squeak. “I don’t need a damn Grammy or anything. That’s the sort of magic all this madness is for.”

Hundreds of celebrities have been “Simpsonized” over the years. This post got me wondering how many musicians have made cameos or have appeared in episodes. Stay tuned for a complete list!

They helped kick off off the Seattle Mariners home opener with two classic baseball tunes: John Fogerty’s “Centerfield” and and incredibly reverant “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” The foursome wore customized Mariners gear, with Gibbard sporting an old-school Mariners logo on his hat. They were clearly in a baseball state of mind.

In a pre-game interview, Gibbard told of his love of the Mariners ever since the Kingdome days in the early 80′s when he’d go to games with his dad. Surprisingly, Gibbard was almost unintelligible because he was sporting a lower-lip full of chew. Eeewwww! Not so sure wife Zoey would approve (I certainly don’t) but it might explain his habit of spitting profusely while performing live. Video of the interview and the performance (taped from TV) is embedded after the jump.

As of this morning, the PS22 chorus has received over 15 million hits on their youtube videos - 3 million alone in January of 2010!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the chorus and their ambitious instructor, Gregg Breinberg (or Mr. B) I highly recommend a trip over to the PS22 Blog. You’ll find all sorts of great stories and videos of performances and rehearsals of some pretty unusual material for 5th graders. I’m talking Björk, Nick Drake, Jay-Z and Nina Simone!

The first video I saw of theirs last year got me kind of choked up because it’s one of my favorite songs ever, “Pictures of You” by The Cure. It was filmed on the last day of the school year and the lyrics had many of the kids holding back tears. Although Mr. B’s gesturing while leading the kids may be a little over the top, their performances are better for it.

The kids have been lucky enough to meet heroes like Beyoncé Knowles, Lady Gaga and Mr. B’s idol, Tori Amos. There’s even a video series where a very cocky Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit takes the reigns with Mr. B’s wishes and instructs the kids to sing arguably the catchiest part of any pop song released last year, “The Reeling”. Yes, that was PS22!

I encourage you to find out more about these kids! For now, grab a tissue and check out ”Under The Milky Way” by The Church, “Pictures of You” by The Cure and “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac.

As we reported back in May, Gary Hustwit, Director of Helvetica, the documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture, has a new project, Objectified. Objectified explores industrial design and the manufactured objects we surround ourselves with on a daily basis.

Objectified will have its US television debut (a shortened version, 53 minutes versus the original 75) this Tuesday, November 24th on PBS, as part of the Emmy Award-winning series Independent Lens. Check your local listings for exact show time/date in your city. PBS has launched an Objectified mini-site and come up with yet another cute game (remember What Font Are You? for the Helvetica broadcast?) to go along with the film’s premiere: play Which Object Are You?

Here’s my solution. Many thanks to redskyatnight from The Twilight Sad forum for typing these in from the booklet.

REFLECTION OF THE TELEVISION

There’s people downstairs
I’m more than a fighter you know
There’s people downstairs
It wasn’t even yours to share

I know you are old
Heavy hand takes hold
television’s too loud
he leaves without a sound

And I know you are old
Heavy hand takes hold

There’s people downstairs
I stole it from a letter
Off your tongue it rolled
Sheltered from the weather you could be so bold
You told me it’d get better
And I know you’re old

There’s people downstairs
I’m more than a fighter you know
Heavy hand takes hold
And I know you are old

There’s people downstairs (x3)
I’m more than a fighter
I’m more than a fighter you know
There’s people downstairs
I’m more than a fighter
People downstairs
There’s people downstairs

I BECAME A PROSTITUTE

There’s a girl in the crowd
And she’s bawling her eyes out
Only girl in the town with her fingers in eyelids

And we’re all fine in the back of your mind
If we do what we like then we could be with you tonight
if we bleed you dry
We’re alright in the back of our minds
If we do what we like then we could be with you tonight
if they bleed you dry
Taken half your tide, taken all your tide
If we bleed you dry

Bleed you dry
We’ve taken half your tide
If we bleed you dry

You are the bearer of a womb without love
You could have had it all
Is that what you said
Is that what you said on a low ride
You said in your hands you’ll stay, all with me today (x2)

There’s a hand in the till
Still believing what she sells
Only girl in the town with her fingers in eyelids

We’re all fine in the back of your mind
If we do what we like then we could be with you tonight
if they bleed you dry
Taken half your tide, taken all your tide

Chorus(x2)

Bleed you dry
I’m taking half your tide
And If I bleed you dry

SEVEN YEARS OF LETTERS

If you say go
There’s a chance that we’re running scared
When they say you’ll never be there
In the dress that you’ll never wear

It’s a sorry affair
We’re on a hiding to nowhere
It’s only right to swear
They pray that I won’t answer you back
It’s the dance that we’ll never share
And alarms that you can’t do without
Running scared
We’re on a hiding to nowhere

No, no, no
It takes a chance a truth or dare
Is there a chance your lover be spare
If we say that we are running scared

Chorus

So you button, you button your lip
And you button, you button your lip
Button, button your lip

If you say go
There’s a chance that we’re running scared
When they say you’ll never be there
In the dress that you’ll never wear
So you button, you button your lip
And you button, you button your lip

We’re on a hiding to nowhere
They pray that I won’t answer you back
It’s the dance that we’ll never share
And alarms that you can’t do without
Running scared
We’re on a hiding to nowhere

MADE TO DISAPPEAR

So show him what you lose when you answer no
Catch the cold
You sail on your own, we share in the toll
And we’re all alone

Reminds me of her groan
You said, forget the night ahead
She’ll never find her on her own
Find her on her own

So tell me if it’s wrong then who’s to know?
We share in the toll
We sailed on our own
And she fits the mould

To the one we know
You’ll never have some honest fun
You said, lover be fair throw your ties to the pair
You’ll always have your honest one

On the way to Bordeaux
You’ll never have some honest fun
You said, lover be fair throw your ties to the fare

You’ll always be your honest one
I’ll always be your honest one
You’ll always have some honest fun

So tell me, do you lose when you answer no
Catch the cold
You sail on your own, we share in the toll
And we’re all alone
Find her on her own, goodbye
Find her on her own
You’ll never find her on her own
Find her on her own, find her on her own

She told you to be fair
I only want some honest fun
She said, lover be fair throw your eyes to the floor
You’re looking at the guilty one

So tell me what you know and then it will be said and done
She said, be gentle, be fair was the fog even there
You’re looking at the guilty one
I only want some honest fun

She told you to be fair
I only want some honest fun
She said, lover be fair throw your eyes to the floor
You’re looking at the guilty one

So tell me what you know and then it will be said and done
She said, be gentle, be fair was the fog even there
You’re looking at the guilty one
I only want some honest fun
I’ll always be your honest one

THE ROOM

And your face is turning hard through the winter
There’s nails in our feet
Hide her, don’t break her
And we’ll hide her
And we’ll leave

And her blood is never spilled after dinner
There’s wine on our breath
We’ll hide her, don’t wake her
And we’ll hide her
And we’ll leave

You’re the grandson’s
You’re the grandson’s toy in the corner
Don’t tell anyone else
You were seen in the cherry tree
Look what you have done
‘Cause you’re a handsome
Just a clever boy on the border
Don’t tell anyone else
And you were seen near the hollow tree
Look what you have done

You’re all on your own ’cause you said you failed to care

There’s a message in the card in your favour
And we’re grinding our teeth
Hide her
Don’t wake her
And we’ll hide her
And we’ll leave

Chorus

You’re all on your own
‘Cause you said you failed to care
Don’t leave your morals there
And you said you failed to care

Do you fall when we dragged her along
You will never know Thursday’s gone
I called you every name from her son
Did you fall
‘Cause you said you failed to care (x2)

THAT BIRTHDAY PRESENT

Have another skin full
Put it in your eye
And if it’s lying on the table
Don’t be so shy

You should be afraid
Take it everywhere
Or you could have the bruises
When the water’s on its way
I could be someone you hate
Familiar to the taste
The feather’s on the blind sight
And always on your case

Have another skin full
Put it in your eye

So you pass it, you pass it
The ceiling’s black and grey
Pushing your arms with her weight
You pass it, you pass it
The purple rope won’t tear
Why do you rest when you stare

The curtains closed again
If your lady’s on parade
You take it on the call there ’cause you have this made
Because your birthday’s getting cold
Just wishing you could go
‘Cause we could be much older
If you only did what you’re told

Have another skin full
Put it in your eye
And if it’s lying on the table
Don’t be so shy

So you pass it, you pass it
The ceiling’s black and grey
You’re pushing your arms with her weight
Winning prize for holding shame
You pass it, you pass it
The purple rope won’t tear
Why do you rest when you stare

So you pass it, you pass it
No rare, take your hands off all the chairs
Will you play off all the others
If you say it will be fair
Your birthday cards with no presents
With your charms down by your side
Will you play off all the others
You’ll go nowhere
If you tip toe so slowly
And you’ll go nowhere

FLOORBOARDS UNDER THE BED

Taken all of our mistakes
And we’ve turned them into aeroplane
Still the boy’s throwing rocks off my face
And the boy’s throwing rocks off my face (x2)

INTERRUPTED

The room was so tight
I’ll see you in the morning light
You and I could bury them all
You said your head was so sore
So tight, depends on who you invite
You and I will bury them all so deep in the snow

And I won’t feed them, feed them to the dogs again
But you come and greet them, greet them with the dogs again
You are the olive rose
Bite down on your pillow

And harrow to woman you sold
Take it all off
See your story unfold
Invite you in and I’ll see your murmurs below
And harrow to the woman you sold
Now it’s you and I
You and I, you and I know
That it’s you and I

They put up no fight but you’re so hard to fright
You and I will bury them all
You said your head was so sore
Such a sorry sight
Especially in the morning light
You and I will bury them all so deep in the snow
And I won’t feed you, feed you to the dogs again
Your heart stops beating
Beat them to the ground again
You are the olive rose
Bite down on your pillow

And harrow to woman you sold
Take it all off
See your story unfold
Invite you in and I’ll see your murmurs below
And harrow to the woman you sold
Now it’s you and I
You and I, you and I know
That it’s you and I

That it’s you and I, you and I
That it’s you and I, you and I

You and I will bury them, bury them
You and I will bury them, bury them
You and I will bury them, bury them
That it’s you and I, you and I

THE NEIGHBOURS CAN’T BREATHE

They’re no thoughts of mine, this time
When the paint went dry, don’t fight ’cause you’re right
Did it pass you by, when the shower wasn’t on?
You had to lie, your secret’s safe and sound

Don’t frown, don’t frown
‘Cause everybody’s wearing black clothes and I’m wearing white
Don’t frown, don’t frown
There’s your sister with her answer and she’s always right
You keep pulling all the heart strings

You hide it in the cupboard
You’re under the sheets
You’re frowning and you know it
You’re happy the neighbours can’t breathe
You’re coming strong when your friend went wrong

I’m not in the white when we play hide and seek
I’m not in the white when we play hide and seek

They’re no thoughts of mine this time
Is your camera blind, don’t fight ’cause you’re right
Will it pass you by, when your sister’s dead and gone?
She had to lie, her secret’s safe and sound

Don’t frown, don’t frown
‘Cause everybody’s wearing black clothes and I’m wearing white
Don’t frown, don’t frown
There’s your sister with her answer and she’s always right
You keep pulling all the heart strings

You hide it in the cupboard
You’re under the sheets
You’re frowning and you know it
You’re happy the neighbours can’t breathe
You’re coming strong when your friend went wrong

I’m not in the white when we play hide and seek

You’re playing in the forest, get down on your knees
Forgetting where you’re from
You’re wrong, you’re begging please

You’re coming on strong
When your friend went wrong
I’m not in the white when we play hide and seek

Although your friend went wrong
I’m not in the white when we play hide and seek (x3)

AT THE BURNSIDE

We can’t all be there so far
At the Burnside
We’re taking everyone in the car
to the Burnside

The brothers were born with a lump in their hearts
Wearing no clothes
Someone knows where they are
Sharing their lungs
Seeing ghosts in the park
Houses in trees
Holding hands with a spark

We can’t all be there so far
At the Burnside
We’re taking everyone in the car
To the Burnside

You’re bending the truth with your hand in your heart
Games for a laugh
Jump from my mark
And we can’t all be there so far
At the Burnside

Hope for the best
When you are flying your kite
It happened before, taken from her side
Wearing no clothes
Someone knows where they are
Holding our torches through the night
At the Burnside

No sign, no sign, no sign anymore (x3)

Anymore, anymore, anymore

Usually when a friend leaves town or a collegue leaves work , you get them a little something to say thanks. Sometimes the process gets flipped on it’s head. Case in point – Adrian from I Pick My Nose closed the doors and shuttered the windows and headed off to South Africa last week and is putting his great SF music blog, I Pick My Nose on indefinite hiatus. He’s such a swell guy that he took the time to present us all with a great parting gift, IPMN KZSU: the ipickmynose sessions digital album. It’s a digital compilation album with the best of the ipickmynose sessions from radio station KZSU. You can download it here. The artists include John Vanderslice, The Dodos, The Morning Benders and a whole lot more.

We’ll miss you Adrian, best of luck in South Africa!

Underworld’s show at The Fox will be the worlds first live audio-visual broadcast to the iPhone. This technology wonder will be brought to you direct from the Fox Theatre in Oakland and accessible through Underworldlive.com. I’ll be there shooting the event. It’s the first time I will have seen the bands legendary show featuring some of the biggest dance hits of the last 15 years.

The broadcast is completely free and all you need is a computer with Quick Time installed on a broadband connection or an iPhone on a wi-fi connection running iPhone 3.0 or higher.

In addition to the live event, to celebrate the release of the full Underworld back catalog for the first time on iTunes, Underworld, in partnership with cutting edge developer iZotope, bring you a nifty iPhone iDrum application containing many tunes from Underworld’s juke box of techno classics.

Featuring tracks from all Underworld’s albums and including ‘Born Slippy’, ‘Two Months Off’ and ‘Cowgirl’, the application allows the user to remix, re-sequence and reconstruct 12 Underworld tunes and also features a piece created by the band themselves exclusively for the application.

With specially commissioned artwork from Tomato’s John Warwicker the application is the closest you’ll get to dropping the kick drum on ‘Born Slippy’ without getting on stage with the guys yourself.

Underworld Tour Dates
August 6th @ The Joint in Las Vegas, NV

August 7th @ Fox Oakland Theater in Oakland, CA

August 8th @ Hardfest in Los Angeles, CA

August 11th @ Kool Haus in Toronto, Canada

August 12th @ Metropolis in Montreal, Canada

August 14th @ Muelle Panamericano in San Juan, Puerto Rico
