The first single from the soundtrack to New Moon is a brand spanking new tune by my long-time favorite Death Cab for Cutie. “Meet Me On The Equinox,” will debut during the Video Music Awards on Sept. 13. The band is definitely being swept up into the tween and cougar hype of all things Twilight. I’m sure Phil’s gonna want to kill me for this post! Press Release and more details after the jump.
“We are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest. We wrote ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’ to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the Twilight series and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters. This song marks the first attempt that Death Cab for Cutie has ever made at contributing new, unreleased material for a film and we are proud to be a part of the Twilight legacy.”
The original “Twilight” soundtrack was released in Nov. 2008, debuted on the Billboard 200 at No.1 and has sold 2.2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. New Moon’s definitely pandering to the hype of indie mainstream. According to Billboard “music industry sources have the sound headed in a more indie-centric direction than the first “Twilight,” with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear and Muse all in the running.” Yikes. This is likely to be ten times bigger for the indie music scene than Garden State. And of course you remember what that did for the Shins…
Alex Patsavas — the influential music supervisor whose credits include “The O.C.,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Gossip Girls” and “Chuck” as well as the original “Twilight” film — is the music supervisor for “New Moon.” All of the songs in “New Moon” will be exclusive to the film, all either written specifically for the movie or never available anywhere else.

wow. I’ve read the books twice and seen the movie enough times to know that the franchise is undeserving of such awesomeness. What was DCFC thinking? I can’t imagine any of them actually reading the books or seeing the movie and thinking it was any good. But any new Death Cab music is still awesome to me.
